Dr. Gabor Maté on "Compassion Fatigue": A Deeper Perspective
Compassion fatigue is often misunderstood. It’s not that people become tired of being compassionate—it’s something much deeper. As a therapist and counselor, I help individuals navigate burnout, emotional exhaustion, and self-compassion, ensuring they care for themselves while caring for others.
What Is Commonly Called "Compassion Fatigue"?
The term describes a real experience, but it’s not about losing the ability to care. Instead, it stems from two key factors:
1. The Nature of the Work
Fatigue arises when we work too hard—especially when energy is expended against resistance. In helping professions, caregiving, and therapy, this emotional labor can become exhausting over time.
2. Our Internal Response to the Work
How we process stress and challenges determines how much they drain us. When we respond consciously and intentionally, we manage our energy more effectively. When we respond unconsciously, stress compounds, leading to burnout.
In essence, what’s called “compassion fatigue” is a mix of work demands and how we internally relate to them. Recognizing this distinction can help professionals, caregivers, and anyone in helping roles develop healthier coping strategies.
Self-Blame & Emotional Exhaustion
Many who experience burnout also struggle with self-blame. However, it’s essential to recognize that certain responses—like passivity or helplessness—are actually the body's wisdom at work. For instance, in overwhelming situations, freezing or withdrawing can be an adaptive survival strategy. If fighting back could have made the situation worse, your body chose the safest option at that moment. Understanding this can shift self-blame into self-compassion and healing.
